How to Take Your First Ice Shower: A Beginner’s Guide

Start at 12°C to 15°C. Stand beneath the Halo before you press. Commit to all 30 seconds. Your first ice shower will hit hard, demand your full attention and be finished before your brain can build a convincing excuse.

Your first session, already set

Mount the Halo, fill the Cooling Core and let the first supply chill overnight. Tomorrow morning, the only complicated part is choosing to press the button.

In this guide

The first-session plan

12°C to 15°C. Thirty seconds. No bargaining.

Pre-chill the Olsek Ice Shower overnight, choose a starting point from 12°C to 15°C and stand directly beneath the Halo. Press start, keep breathing and own the full 30 seconds. Then top up the reservoir so session two is waiting for you.

01

What should you do the night before your first ice shower?

Fill the 15 L reservoir, choose 12°C to 15°C and give the Cooling Core its first night to pull the water down to temperature.

The first session starts before the morning alarm. Connect the supplied 1.5 m hose, mount the Halo inside the shower, fill the reservoir and set the controller. Olsek does not alter your home's plumbing and the bathroom-side hardware runs at 24V, so the setup belongs beside the shower you already use.

Let the first fill chill overnight. Leave the system switched on and it can cycle as needed to hold the selected temperature. The complete fill, chill, pump and drain path is covered in how an ice shower works. If you are still choosing a system, use the complete home buyer's guide before planning session one.

Your night-before checklist

  • Mount the Halo where the cold will cover you from overhead.
  • Fill the integrated reservoir to its 15 L capacity.
  • Choose a first setting between 12°C and 15°C.
  • Leave the first fill to chill overnight.
  • Put your towel where you can grab it without thinking.

02

How do you take your first ice shower?

Make the procedure brutally simple. Set the scene once, put your whole body under the outlet and give the next 30 seconds no escape route.

StepWhat to doWhy it matters
1. Get readyFinish your normal shower or step into the shower dry.Olsek can be the final 30 seconds or the whole event.
2. Check the settingUse 12°C to 15°C for session one.You learn the experience without wasting the progression.
3. Take positionStand directly beneath the Halo before pressing start.Every litre and every second lands where it should.
4. Press onceStart the standard 30-second session. No reaching through the spray and no slow retreat.
5. Stay with itStand tall, keep breathing and hold your place. The challenge becomes the point instead of a surprise.
6. Finish cleanPress stop when the session ends and step out.One complete rep beats a dramatic half-session.

That is an ice shower: actively chilled water delivered through a shower outlet, not a cold tap turned as far as it will go. Read the full ice shower guide for the category definition, or compare an ice shower with a normal cold shower.

03

What will your first 30 seconds feel like?

The first hit is loud, immediate and impossible to scroll through. That is exactly why people come back.

  1. 00:00

    The switch flips

The Halo lands across your shoulders and upper body. Whatever you were thinking about five seconds ago disappears.

  2. 00:05

    Your breathing gets noisy

The instinct is to tense, step sideways or hold your breath. Stay under the coverage and give the exhale your attention.

  3. 00:15

    You take the session back

The water is still properly cold, but the surprise is gone. Your job is no longer to react. It is to finish.

  4. 00:25

The last five belong to you

Hold your posture, let the clock close and step out having done exactly what you said you would do.

This is why a true ice shower can feel bigger than its clock. The water is pre-chilled, the Halo coverage is wide and there is no mild opening minute. Our guide to ice shower benefits explains why that hard reset works so well before coffee, work or training.

04

How should you breathe during your first ice shower?

Do not chase monk-level calm. Keep breathing, make the exhale deliberate and refuse to let the first gasp make the decision.

  • Expect the opening reaction. The first hit is meant to grab your full attention.
  • Do not hold your breath. Give yourself a simple rhythm instead of locking up.
  • Focus on the exhale. One controlled breath out gives your mind a job that is stronger than the urge to move.
  • Drop your shoulders. Stay tall without turning every muscle into armour.
  • Let 30 seconds be enough. The win is completing the standard cleanly, not making the first attempt theatrical.

05

How should you adjust your next ice shower?

Keep the duration at 30 seconds and change one thing: the temperature.

If it felt mild

Drop 1°C or 2°C

Keep the same 30 seconds and make the next hit sharper without rewriting the routine.

If you dreaded the start

Repeat the same setting

Stay at 12°C to 15°C until pressing the button stops becoming a morning debate.

If you dodged the spray

Fix the Halo position

Centre yourself before pressing start and let wide coverage make the session honest.

If the water was not ready

Pre-chill and leave it on

Set the first fill overnight, top up after use and let Olsek maintain the ready state.

If you wasted the opening

Start from underneath

Do not press from outside the spray. Take position first so the full session counts.

The detailed ice shower temperature guide maps every band from 15°C down to 1°C. Keep the clock stable with our ice shower duration guide, then let the temperature dial become your progression.

06

Which first ice shower mistakes kill the routine?

Most bad first sessions are not a cold problem. They are a setup, ego or hesitation problem.

  • Starting at 1°C for the story. Near-freezing is waiting for you. Begin at 12°C to 15°C and earn a clean progression.
  • Pressing from outside the spray. Reaching in wastes cold water and creates the perfect moment to back out.
  • Changing temperature and time together. One variable at a time makes progress obvious.
  • Waiting to feel motivated. The session is 30 seconds precisely so motivation does not get a vote.
  • Leaving the top-up for later. Reset the reservoir while the win is fresh and tomorrow stays frictionless.
  • Comparing it with a plunge clock. Moving water and full immersion are different experiences. Read our ice shower vs ice bath comparison before borrowing a tub protocol.

07

What should you do after your first ice shower?

Press stop, step out, top up and move. Do not let a 30-second ritual grow a ten-minute admin tail.

Used water lands in the shower and leaves through the bathroom drain. Add back what the session used from the reservoir. At the maximum Halo flow of 7 L/min, a standard session uses up to 3.5 L. One full 15 L reservoir provides four standard sessions.

Leave Olsek switched on after the top-up. The Cooling Core will usually return the added water to your chosen temperature within a few hours, depending on how much you added and how warm it was. No filter change, water treatment or scheduled servicing needs to be inserted into the routine.

The 60-second reset

  • Press stop and grab the towel.
  • Top up the water released during the session.
  • Leave Olsek switched on at your chosen temperature.
  • Walk away with tomorrow's session already being made.

First ice shower: frequently asked questions

What temperature should I use for my first ice shower?

Start an Olsek Ice Shower at 12°C to 15°C. That is cold enough to command your attention while giving you room to learn the Halo coverage and complete the standard 30-second session. When that setting feels familiar, lower it by 1°C or 2°C while keeping the time unchanged.

How long should my first ice shower last?

Make your first Olsek session the standard 30 seconds. The water is already chilled and the Halo provides wide overhead coverage, so the hit begins immediately. You do not need to add minutes to prove the session worked.

Should I take a warm shower before my first ice shower?

You can finish your normal warm shower first, then make the ice shower a clean 30-second ending. You can also use Olsek as a standalone morning reset. In either case, have the water pre-chilled, get beneath the Halo before pressing start and commit to the full session.

How should I breathe during my first ice shower?

Expect the opening hit to make your breathing quick and noisy. Keep your posture tall, avoid holding your breath and concentrate on a controlled exhale. The goal is not perfect calm on day one. It is to stay present and finish the 30 seconds without stepping away from the spray.

Do I need to add ice before my first ice shower?

No. Olsek uses active refrigeration to chill its own 15 L water supply from 1°C to 15°C. Fill the reservoir, choose the temperature and let the first fill chill overnight. There are no ice bags to buy or carry into the bathroom.

When should I make my ice shower colder?

Lower the setting when you can take the first hit, stay under the Halo and complete all 30 seconds without dodging the flow. Move down by 1°C or 2°C at a time and leave the duration fixed, so you can feel exactly what the temperature change added.

What should I do after my first ice shower?

Press stop, step out and get on with the day. Top up the water used from the Olsek reservoir straight afterwards, then leave the system switched on so it can return to your chosen temperature. That one-minute reset makes the next session ready before motivation enters the conversation.

The bottom line

Set it high. Stand underneath. Press before the excuse arrives.

Start your first Olsek Ice Shower at 12°C to 15°C and keep the session to 30 seconds. Breathe through the first hit, finish cleanly and top up straight afterwards. Do that once and the unknown is gone. Do it again tomorrow and you have the beginning of a real ritual.
